Dwarfs or dwarves? (And Tolkien stuff)

That quartet of P words are a quartet of homophones for how my screen reader reads them but alternating pairs for how I would say them… Granted I’m a yank, but my screen reader is set to British English… and I have picked up a number of Britishisms(e.g. I routinely call myself a yank in casual conversation, I shorten mathematics to maths, I spell element 13 as Aluminium, I routinely refer to the Atlantic Ocean as the pond, if I wasn’t an infrequent consumer of alcohol who always drinks at home, I half expect I’d use the term pub, etc…

Can I ask why?

Though as an American, I always found non-American synthetic voices to sound less…synthetic. Like my Siri was Irish for a while.

Simply put, I prefer espeak-ng’s default British English voice to its default American English voice. Plus, I used a Linux Distro that defaulted to British English for about a decade, so I got used to itand didn’t like when I switched to Debian and got American English at the log-in screen.

And to be honest, I tend to get major uncanny valley vibes from so-called natural TTS, one reason I stick with espeak despite it being obviously synthetic.
