I’ve seen that some games, mainly ChoiceScript, come with a few options that alter the writing and story to remove whatever the player’s uncomfortable with or simply make their character feel more relatable. What sort of these options do you like to see? This can include being able to toggle romance elements, use custom pronouns, or set your character’s own gender or sexuality. Obsolete Stars has a “touch aversion” mode that rewrites scenes including physical contact, which was pretty thoughtful, and I had never seen that choice before.
I like that most Choicescript games qllow you to pick your gender and sexuality including pronouns.
What really makes them accessible to me personally is that I can scale the text up into something I can read (I’m legally blind).
With regards to sexuality I appreciate that more and more games allow me to play as asexual without locking me out of romance (I’m a sucker for romance in games).
In the past playing asexual more often than not meant playing as asexual and aromantic, which doesn’t fit me.
It’s also nice for me that it’s getting more common to offer a toggle for which option checks what stat/raises stats or occasionally the tone of a choice.
I am bad at reading tone in writing because English is my second language so not everything is obvious at first glance for me.
I once thought it would be cool to choose your response AND then choose your tone/disposition before proceeding with a choice. The way I envisioned it would be that you make a choice and then apply a flavour of intent. So you could ask an NPC if they have any more work for you and then choose a tone and see how the sentence changes depending on how you say it. You could be annoyed/sarcastic, sincere/eager, aggressive, etc. and that sentence would change accordingly before you press to confirm.
Maybe it just complicates a simple choice and creates too many possible responses from the NPCs, but it might be very rewarding from a role-playing perspective… and depending on the point of your game, who knows?
For ChoiceScript-style games, I like being able to choose the PC’s gender and pronouns, and for games with sexually explicit content that isn’t essential to the plot, I like having the option to skip over it.
