Due to the recent threads on Bisquixe, I was inspired to try to find more weird things to do with it. I’ve made a prototype where you can use Inform to play an animation that’s ‘behind’ the text:
I think Draconis once said it would be much easier to implement into Parchment, so porting it over would be cool. Other than that I’ve never actually had someone check the code at all (that I remember, if someone did I apologize for my confusion) to see if there are obvious flaws or issues.
As far as I know, there are only three games that have ever actually used it; 2 by me, and then Studio by Charm Cochran. The games Six and Transparent were also retrofitted with Bisquixe to play music online.
So, there’s just not much of a demand right now. If more people use it, there might be more features desired. If not, then there’s not much of an issue.
I guess one common request I’ve seen is an easy button-based compass rose that can be turned on or off for navigation.
Putting the picture behind the text is how I’ve been approaching mixing text and graphics. Ie overlapping the space. This becomes a lot more acute when you need to be 16:9.
This thread doesn’t need to be about marketing, but one thing I don’t have a clear grasp on is how Bisquixe compares with Vorple, which seems to have been used by more games. (But I’ve never made IF myself, so I’m not the target audience.)
When I started making Bisquixe, Vorple didn’t work offline and needed an online server to run. I made bisquixe so it would work offline. The images, music, and hyperlinks in a Bisquixe game also work the same with just the bare gblorb file in an interpreter, as well; only the CSS doesn’t get transferred to the gblorb/interpreter scheme.
I think Vorple might work offline now! But I’m not sure.
While it’s definitely nice seeing people use Bisquixe, my main goal in general is to see parser games get the same kind of nice treatment Twine games have in terms of appearance and multimedia integration. If basic quixe/parchment gets fancier or Vorple gets easier to use, and bisquixe is no longer needed, I’d still be happy!
